Varun Chakaravarthy made his ODI debut on February 9, 2025, at the age of 33, becoming the second-oldest cricketer to make his debut for India. Varun Chakaravarthy has been handed his cap in Cuttack by Ravindra Jadeja.

Kuldeep Yadav has been rested for the ODI series, giving Varun Chakaravarthy an opportunity to test himself in the format ahead of the Champions Trophy.

In a pre-series press conference, captain Rohit Sharma stated that the selection certainly puts Chakaravarthy in contention for a place in the Champions Trophy squad. India has just three days left to finalize their squad for the ICC tournament.
